Your Car’s Battery in the Desert Heat

dead car batteryWhen you drive in Las Vegas, your luxury vehicle’s car battery is especially sensitive to the heat associated with desert conditions. Here are three tips to keep your car battery working well in the desert. If you follow these tips, you are unlikely to end up on the side of the road or stuck in a parking lot with a dead battery.

Clean the battery: Without a doubt desert heat can speed up the internal corrosion process of a battery. In fact, within a few months it can damage the battery beyond repair. To avoid this, remove any corrosion by cleaning up the battery connections with a scouring pad or brush. Wait until the engine cools down to avoid burning yourself and exercise caution while cleaning the battery.

Check water level: Believe it or not, the water level of a battery can drop quickly and drastically due to the desert’s dry heat.  To check your battery’s water level, turn off the engine and wait for it to cool down. Then, open the removable filler caps and peer inside.  Assess if there is water inside the battery, and if it is clean. If it appears dry, buy distilled water to top it off. Make sure not to overfill.  Do not use tap water as unfiltered chemicals in tap water can damage the battery and cause further corrosion. If there is no cap, head to a professional who can check out your water level for you.

Check the receipt: If you bought your battery a long time ago, you might want to consider replacing it even before it expires. While it might seem like a waste of money to buy a battery in advance, it can save you plenty of time and headache down the road (pun intended).
