Basic Automotive Terms For All Drivers

BMW Auto Repair

Even though you may not know how to repair cars, you still drive one every day. Not being able to replace a dipstick does not mean you shouldn’t care about it.. You must learn the basics of your car in order to use it effectively. There are a few, simple automotive terms that every driver should be able to recognize.

1. Dipstick

Dipsticks are typically used to measure the amount of liquid in your vehicle. By inserting and removing the stick, the liquid will leave a mark indicating the amount left. The most common dipstick in a car is the oil level dipstick, but there is also usually one for brake fluid, coolant and maybe a few others on some models.

2. Spark Plug

A spark plug is a small device that sends electrical currents from a car’s ignition to the combustion section. It is designed to ignite the mixture inside of the car’s internal combustion engine. This process fires up the engine and starts the car.

3. [Battery] Corrosion

Battery corrosion occurs when the internal or external parts of a car battery corrode and deteriorate after continual use. Over the years, the lead of a battery disintegrates because of acid buildup. Also, too much heat increases the disintegration quickler. Overuse of the battery is another cause. Fortunately, corrosion is a common process that can be cleaned off regularly.

4. Brake Pad

Brake pads are devices that control the braking system in a car. The discs and pads stick together to create enough friction to stop the car. For every disc rotor, there are usually two brake pads that undergo normal wear and tear after a few years. The designs vary based on the type of vehicle and the intended usage. Race cars are built with strong, long-lasting pads, and regular cars have softer designs.

5. Timing Belt

In most car engines, a timing belt is designed to time the rotations of the camshaft and crankshaft. Without this belt, the valves would not open and close in synchronization preventing the mobility of the car from moving properly. The timing belt is lighter and quieter than the timing chain and may need replacements after continual use.

A check engine light is a warning that alerts the driver about an engine malfunction. Usually found next to the steering wheel in your dashboard, the light usually glows red to tell the driver to check the engine.

Depending on the make and model of your car, the warning symbol may vary slightly.  In general, a steady light shows a small issue, and a flashing light shows a major issue.

It’s easy for the average driver to feel a little intimidated by mechanics who seem to speak a foreign language when it comes to discussing your car repairs.  We hope that knowing the aforementioned basic terms can help you navigate “mechanic lingo” a little better the next time you need car maintenance!  Call us at 702-255-4090 today!
